Why Fancy Shmanchy WordPress Themes suck

18 September 2014 Filed Under: web design, Wordpress 2 Comments

I’ve had my fair share of nightmares when it comes to free & Paid WordPress themes. I’ve paid top dollar (which in Rands was probably a good chunk of my left arm) for several WordPress themes that totally left me feeling deflated and almost broke! I learnt the hard way because I was trying to take the easy way out of designing web sites for my clients but boy did it back fire, stress me out and cost me over $300!

B&W Hands Typing On A Laptop

So why, why, why do they suck?

Click on over to Themeforest and it’s jam packed with a beautiful array of amazing themes for creatives, restaurants, designers, non-profits and you name it. The pictures are perfectly placed, the categories make complete sense and oh that Google map it’s just perfect for your customers to find you. You continue scrolling down, loving everything you see, you’ve landed in website heaven and what makes it better it’s just a case of drag and drop and tada! you’ve got the best website around and before you know it your clicking the pay button and downloading your way to the most amazing online space like ever!

Well not quite. And I’m speaking from total experience here!

Themeforest is designed by designers who are really good at selling themes, I like to think of their themes as all those beautiful adverts you see in glossy magazines – trying to sell you a lifestyle. If you buy this theme you’ll get this amazing website that is going to completely change your life. Yeah right!

You hand over your $$ for a template but then you quickly realise it doesn’t include all those beautiful pictures, the perfectly selected categories, the happy smiling ‘Work with us’ headshots and the amazingly curated wording. So what you do is scrounge around trying to replicate it with the pictures and text you have inserting them into all those tricky to navigate boxes but somehow it never quite looks like what you bought. Your frustrated that it isn’t as perfect as the one you bought so you give up and you go back to old TwentyTwenty and write off those wasted dollars.

I’m not completely writing off Themeforest all I’m saying is you’ve got to be careful about choosing your themes, don’t be fooled into thinking that by handing over a few dollars you are going to get the website you want without any effort.

Testimonials

Nicola helped me turn the image of my blog in my head into a reality. She has gone above and beyond every step of the way; always willing to offer up help and advice and teaching me how to do things better myself. I was a little worried about working with someone in another city; but the whole process was simple and streamlined and the distance was totally irrelevant. I loved working with Nicola and look forward to working with her again in the future.
