A few of my handy WordPress secrets

Over the past 6 months I’ve dealt with several different clients and with each project I have learnt many many awesome nifty WordPress tricks. While these might now be second nature to me, I realised that many of you might not know these simple yet handy tricks. So today I thought I’d share them with you to try out and hopefully they make your WordPress life a little simpler and prettier. Hope you likey!

Mind the Gap
I’ll set the scene, you are happily typing away in your Visual Editor and you press enter to go to the next line but all of a sudden you get this massive gap and you’re like why, why, why and how do I get rid of it? Easy, instead just press SHIFT and ENTER at the same time and you’ll be taken to a new line without a gap!

Want to keep it private?
Keeping a post or page password protected for certain subscribers, members or VIPs is really simple. On the Publish sidebar you’ll find the ‘Visibility’ section, click edit and you’ll see a ‘Password Protect’ option. Create a password, publish and share your link with your special readers.

Simple Sharing buttons
The best trick and a MUST for all bloggers. These simple buttons give your readers the easy option of sharing your posts on Social Media. You’ll find mine at the bottom of my posts and they look like this…
Here’s how to add them to your blog…
Step 1: Go to Settings -> Sharing
Step 2: Scroll down and Enable the settings that you want
Step 3: Save!

You might find that they may need a little changing to fit in with your branding, if you need some help with that please let me know. I’d be happy to help!

Pretty up those links
This is one of the first things I do on ALL my WordPress sites, firstly because it’s better for SEO and secondly because it looks nicer. Nobody likes links that look like this… https://nicolatweed.co.za/?p=1175
To amend your links go to Settings -> Permalinks and choose ‘Post Name’ then click save.

Amending your Dashboard
I’ve amended my dashboard so that it’s easy for me to read my Google Analytics, create a quick post and see my latest comments and updates.  You can do the same by simply finding the ‘Screen Options’ tab on the top right hand side, clicking the down arrow and selecting the items you’d like shown on your dashboard. Here is a shot of what you are looking for…
